McLaren's rugged, carbon-fiber-reinforced engineering is that although the fixed roof has been removed, there is no need to provide additional support for the low-strength windshield wiper with the high-strength A-pillars, which was first used in Car Coupe 720S. In order to enhance passenger protection levels in case of a coup d'état, fixed carbon fiber structural pillars have been incorporated into the rear of the MonoCell II mono steel cage structure, as well as additional fixing points for the collapsible roof system and seatbelts. The steel was first introduced in the first generation of the Super Series, but replacing it with carbon fiber props helped reduce the weight of the ROPS in the 720SSpider by 6.8 kg compared to the 650S.
Overall, the 720S Spider weighs 49kg - or 4% less - compared to the 720S Coupé. The extra weight is mainly associated with the folding steel roof system (RHT) and the Tonneau cover system. With its light weight of 1332 kg, the 720S Spider is less weighty than its competitors, with a weight of 88 kg less than its nearest 1420 kg. Weight reduction is the cornerstone of the dynamic, efficient, and high-performance benefits that McLaren has contributed to leveraging the experiences of its customers.
New glass supports contribute to improving the visual appearance and striking presence of the car
The 720S Spider is inspired by the 720p Coupé, which offers a 360-degree view, allowing light to flow into the cab and setting new industry standards for driver visibility. This unprecedented driver vision philosophy is central to the second generation of the Super Series, and the new 720S Spider, which elevates this concept with its unique glass stylists, improves the driver's vision, as well as the striking appearance of the car. The front edge of the platform is equipped with an aerodynamic bearing and gradually reduced to incorporate shaded glass. The design and the use of glass in the stents improve the driver's sideview by 12% compared to the previous version of the Super Series Spider.
